Today's Rant..

I've been busy for a while, but i felt i should post today since i'll be out of town visiting my fiance this weekend. So, for those of you who have missed it, i'm sorry for the delay but i'm back.

A lot has happened in the last week. Barry Bonds tied Babe Ruth for 714 HR on all time list, Barbaro broke his leg at the Preakness-thus ending his run at the Triple Crown. That may be the safest record in sports now. Also, Taylor Hicks shocked me by winning American Idol. I was sure he wouldn't win, but after Tuesday's performances, i knew it was inevitable. Congrats Taylor. The Hippies won the Amazing Race, Aras won Survivor and we just had the season finale of Lost last night. I'm still confused now after watching it, but i get confused easy.

The man credited with starting conservative direct mail fundraising, Richard Viguerie, wrote a fantastic column in Sunday's Washington Post about George W. Bush's betrayal to his base voters. If you get the chance, please take a look at it:

Today's Washington Times had an interesting piece about the rate of arrest of illegal aliens falling off the pace from arrests made during the Clinton Administration. This is interesting that is being reported by the Times, which is widely considered a conservative newspaper. Below is the article:
Arrest of illegals falls off Clinton pace
By Stephen DinanTHE WASHINGTON TIMESMay 25, 2006

The U.S. Border Patrol increased at a faster rate and apprehended more illegal aliens per year under President Clinton than under President Bush, according to statistics from a new, unpublished congressional research briefing report. Mr. Bush trails his predecessor on a series of measures of border security, says the briefing from the Congressional Research Service to the House Judiciary Committee, which was based on Department of Homeland Security data. Mr. Clinton increased the number of Border Patrol agents and pilots by 126 percent over his eight-year term, or an average of 642 per year, while Mr. Bush has averaged 411 new agents per year through 2005, for a total increase of 22.3 percent over his tenure. Although Mr. Bush last week said his administration has caught and returned 6 million illegal aliens, that's actually a drop from any five-year period during Mr. Clinton's administration, the briefing says. Meanwhile, the number of alien absconders has grown by more than 200,000 during Mr. Bush's term, reaching 536,644 in fiscal 2005; the number of completed fraud cases has dropped; and, until recently, detention beds hovered at or below the level Mr. Bush inherited from Mr. Clinton in 2001. "The sense of urgency that comes with deploying the National Guard is belied by the administration's consistent opposition to providing the necessary resources that our border security agencies need to do their jobs," said Sen. Robert C. Byrd of West Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Appropriations Committee. Mr. Byrd has sought for years to get the Bush administration to add Border Patrol agents and detention beds and improve enforcement technology. Bush administration officials say they are looking for ways to work more efficiently. "It's always been a serious matter, and certainly since 9/11, we've been serious about border security," said Jarrod Agen, deputy press secretary at the Department of Homeland Security. "I would say we've looked at changing our approach and looking at this new approach, it's learning from ways that didn't work in the past, and it's integrating systems that hadn't been looked at in the past and looking at all the problems across the board and seeing how they can be incorporated together," he said. He also said to look beyond the percentage increases and at the actual numbers. Although Mr. Bush has increased the Border Patrol by 3,000 through the first five years, last week he proposed adding 6,000 agents to reach 18,000 by 2008. And the administration has made measurable progress in the last year, he said, particularly on returning "other-than-Mexican," or OTM, illegal aliens back home. The average amount of time that OTMs spend in detention facilities has fallen from 66 days to 21 days in the past year. The shorter time means that more people can be held and that fewer have to be released into the population on usually futile hope they will return to be deported.
In a recent speech, White House Deputy Chief of Staff Karl Rove said that during the week of April 10, 2,100 OTMs were apprehended, of which 1,300 were immediately returned and 830 were released. Of those 830, 700 were Salvadorans, who are required to be released because of a court decision -- something the administration says it is working to change. Mr. Bush is pressing for Congress to send him a broad immigration bill that includes a solution to the current illegal alien problem and a new program for future foreign workers. But he has to overcome objections of conservatives, especially in the House, who say the first job is to control the U.S. borders. "I support all of the additions the president is making as far as National Guard, Border Patrol and technology," said House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Peter T. King, New York Republican. "Having said that, granting legalization or amnesty would undo much of that. So on balance, it's a much worse [proposal], because whatever additional security we would gain through additional personnel, we would lose that amount of security by legalizing the illegals." T.J. Bonner, president of the National Border Patrol Council, said Border Patrol staffing and spending has increased dramatically, but because of "insane policies" that tie agents' hands, they are apprehending fewer illegals. In 1987, each agent averaged 357 apprehensions, but that fell to 110 per agent in 2004, he said. In addition, while the number of aliens being smuggled by criminal organizations has gone up, the number of smugglers being prosecuted is about the same. But Mr. Bonner said Mr. Bush is no worse than other presidents before him, and he credited Congress with the Border Patrol increases in the 1990s. "As far back as my career goes, there has never been a president -- and I've been around 28 years -- who was serious about securing our borders and stopping illegal immigration," he said. Bush spokesman Tony Snow last week said the president's proposal to use the National Guard and increase Border Patrol agents means "the president is actually taking a more aggressive approach on border security than the House of Representative itself took." House Republicans, though, said that they worked within the budget constraints the White House gave them and that if the president had told them he would find more money, they would have done more. Rep. Tom Tancredo, head of the Congressional Immigration Reform Caucus, questioned Mr. Bush's commitment to border security, saying the president had to be pulled "kicking and screaming" to go along with earlier border-security measures. He said he thinks Mr. Bush will say anything to win a guest-worker program. "I'm sorry to say this, but he is not sincere about his desire to secure the border," the Colorado Republican said. "He is sincere in his desire to get an amnesty that will pass, and he will essentially do a Clinton on us -- say anything, promise anything -- but I'm afraid I just don't trust him anymore."
I think history will record that Bill Clinton was a better President than George W. Bush. Even with impeachment tarnishing his legacy, i could effectively argue that Clinton was better than Bush.
Today, the US Senate is scheduled to vote on the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, S. 2611. This will be the most important legislation to ever come out of the Senate because, if passed as is, will affect our country for generations to come. Most of the talk coming out about this bill is that 10-12 million illegal immigrants would receive amnesty. What hasn't been discussed is the fact that CIRA would allow over 3 to 5 times the amount of illegal immigrants to enter the US over the next 20 years than under present guidelines.
US Senator, Jeff Sessions (R-AL), put together a study that shows that if the current legal immigration level (950,000 a year for 20 years or 18.9 million over 20 years) is excluded from the total, CIRA would be described as increasing legal immigration by 54.3 million to 73.4 million over 20 years. The influx of immigrants provided for in S. 2611 would increase to the current US population by almost 31%.
Some of the problems of the compromise proposal are:
Cost: The Congressional Budget Office estimates the bill increase the deficit by 29 Billion in just 5 years and more than that in the years to come.
Categories of aliens that should be removed from the US under present guidelines would be allowed to qualify for the mass amnesty program, including:
-Aliens with certain felony convictions or 3 misdemeanors
-Aliens previously barred from the receiving immigration for life, because they filed frivolous asylum application
-Aliens who are under final orders of removal, or who signed voluntary departure agreements but have never been deported.
The "essential worker" program is not a temporary-worker program. The program contains no economic trigger allowing workers to be sent home when US economy dips. These workers will also receive green cards, which means they never have to leave and are on a direct path to citizenship.
The bill provides free legal counsel paid for by the American Taxpayer to illegal-alien agricultural workers. The bill reverses current law and allows illegal aliens to be eligible for in-state tuition rates, and compete with US citizens and legal residents for Stafford loans-making it even more difficult for financially strapped kids to go to college, even in their own state.
Next week i will give a final synopsis of the bill after we have all the amendments passed.

Elliot heading back to Richmond..

It looks like Elliot is heading back to Richmond after being voted out of American Idol. He was a nice guy, a local guy from the Capital city, and i thought he was the best singer. It was also good to see Mayor Douglas Wilder. Mayor Wilder was the first black Governor of VA and has been regarded by many people as our best former governor. He is a fine man who really cares about VA, Richmond in particular. He is the first candidate in VA, who as an at-large candidate, won every precinct in his area, and in his case, it was the entire city of Richmond. That was impressive. I envision good things for Elliot. I am sure someone will sign him. I also think this is the most talented final AI has ever had.

The Hippies beat the Frat Boys on The Amazing Race finale this evening.

The Senate today has made some important votes on amendments to the Immigration Reform legislation right now. They have a hard job and today's votes show just how tough it will be to pass any reform legislation. Today they passed legislation building a fence along a certain portion of the border and placed classifications on who qualifies for a "guest worker" program. It will be interesting to see how those amendments shape the rest of the bill and the debates.

Today's Rant.

Last night, the President pre-empted Monday night sweeps TV to address the issue of illegal immigration. I am going to post a link to view the text of the speech...http://www.breitbart.com/news/2006/05/15/D8HKHJG80.html. Please take a look at it. The President said he supports comprehensive immigration reform that would accomplish 5 clear objectives:

First, the US must secure its borders. This is the basic responisibility of a sovereign nation. I'm glad to see that now Bush cares about national sovereignty now, when it benefits him. His solution is to increase technology and to put the National Guard on our borders. Even though we only have about 12,000 Border Agents now, they have apprehended and sent home about 6 million illegals. I don't see how putting troops on the border does not militarize the southern border. I don't see how we can rationally believe that after one year, when the Guard is reduced, that we can stop the millions of illegals coming over with just 6,000 new border agents.

Second, we will establish a temporary worker program. I wonder how we will get all the illegals who apply for the program to submit to the criminal background checks and when their stint here is up, how we will get them to leave. There is no way we can police that. That's not even rational.

Third, holding employers accountable for the workers they hire. The solution: A new ID card for every legal foreign worker. That is unenforceable. I don't see how we can check all these employers, many of whom just find different illegals every day to do various jobs. I see this as the precursor to the national ID card. Mark my words, they will morph that into the National ID card program for all Americans.

Fourth, we need to find a middle ground that is not amnesty and not direct deportation. Illegals who have roots in our country should have to pay a meaningful penalty for breaking the law (whatever that is), to pay their taxes (which is so insane i can hardly comment on it. How are they going to pay taxes when they all get paid in cash. Are these employers going to submit to payroll systems, fill out W-2 forms, etc. This is laughable that they think they could force these people to pay their taxes. I wish they could do it, but its impossible), and to learn English and to work in a job for a number of years. How can me make illegals learn English when we don't even have English as our official language. We can't be serious about helping Illegals achieve the American Dream and ask them to learn English when we don't require all of our citizens to know English.

Fifth, Bush wants to maintain the melting pot of our culture by urging English to help assimilation. I've already talked about that.

I believe we won't get any real immigration reform to come out of the US Senate. Just today, they killed a proposal to address border security first in their reform package. The Senate doesn't want to deal with this because you have several Senators who are running for President and they are too Chicken S--- to make any real reforms. I think the US House will kill the Senate proposal, at least i hope. Any bill that doesn't address border security, building a fence, etc. is a bad proposal.

I'm going to post a couple of horoscopes today. This has been requested by one of my few readers. As always, horoscopes are courtesy of the Onion.

Libra September 23 - October 23
You will ignore the voice of reason once again this week, but that's largely because it's gone hoarse and grown nearly inaudible over the years.

Scorpio October 24 - November 21
While others have overlooked the brilliance of your fanfiction, they won't be able to ignore the upcoming 60 Minutes/60 Minutes II crossover you have planned.

Sagittarius November 22 - December 21
A long nature hike through the peaks and valleys of a national park's black-bear preserve will drastically enhance your appreciation of urban centers this week.

Tonight, we see the final Three on American Idol. I want Elliot to win, but i predict a Katherine win. Tune in tonight at 8pm.

More tomorrow...

Today's Rant

"I'M SHOCKED COTTON..."
Chris Daughtry got voted out on American Idol last night. No one saw that coming. It looks as though my worst fears may be coming true... Taylor Hicks might win. I think all the men in America saved Katherine last night, cause i thought she was gone. I hope Elliot wins now, he's clearly the best singer and I think he deserves it.

Man, Lost is getting good, but how did Mr. Eko not get hurt when he fell from the rock ledge. I still don't get the show most of the time, but it is the best series on TV. if you've been sleeping on it, get Season 1 then you can get some of the back story.

Today, i just found out the Government has my phone records as well as the records of tens of millions of other Americans. I don't know why they'd want mine, but they do. Seems as though the phone companies AT&T, Verizon and Bellsouth gave the NSA access to their customers' records. This very well may be the largest database in the world. I guess the NSA wants a database of ever call ever made within the US border. This means they have detailed records of calls made to family members, co-workers, etc.
The President authorized the NSA to eavesdrop-without warrants-on international calls and international e-mails of "people" suspected of having links to terrorists when party to the communication is in the US. I guess the NSA decided that wasn't enough. This has happened because we as Americans have been to willing to give up our rights and freedom in exchange for "protection" from terrorism. Once you lose these rights, you never get them back. We've opened Pandora's Box. Now, any administration can spy on anyone it wants to, without recourse. Nothing this administration does surprises me anymore.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20060511/ap_on_go_co/immigration
Well...Well... the Senate is going to try to legalize the 10-12 million illegal immigrants we have here in America. I think they will have a hard time getting a compromise from the House, at least i hope they would. I think any member of Congress who supports amnesty should be replaced in the next election. The #1 issue this year and heading into 2008 is immigration. The person that becomes President will be the person who either is the toughest on that issue or who at least "sounds" like they would be toughest on that issue. If our Congress votes for Amnesty, then we need to replace them with an American Congress.

How is that when you chew a Cinnaburst, that you can chew the paper with it? I know the paper has flavor crystals, but the paper just chews right up with the gum. That's just Crazy.

Today's Rant

Did anyone see the Kentucky Derby on Saturday? What a race. Barbaro toyed with the field. He was in the top 6 most of the race until the last turn then he turned on the jets and that was it. He won pulling away. We have not had a Triple Crown winner since 1978 but I think this might be the year that changes. Recently we have had the Triple Crown contenders winning the Derby and the Preakness, but falling at the Belmont. The only question with Barbaro is can he run so soon after the Derby. He usually has about 5 weeks off between races, but i think he'll be fine.

Barry Bonds hit no. 713 last night. There has been no fanfare and MLB is staying away from this, but this week history could be made. Babe Ruth could get passed this week and no one will really talk about it. I just find it disturbing that everyone is staying away from Bonds but embraced McGwire and Sosa in 1998 when they made the run at Marris' record. Everyone knows McGwire was on the juice then but only because he's retired does he get a free pass. I just think it's a little hypocritical. I will celebrate this week if Bonds ties and passes Ruth.

I ask everyone to go get Pat Buchanan's Where the Right Went Wrong. I cannot put it down. For anyone who has wondered how President Bush put us in this war in Iraq, this book will answer all of your questions. I think it is very important that Bush supporters and Bush haters all read this book. If you disagree with most of Buchanan's other beliefs, you cannot dismiss his historical knowledge, his foreign policy experience, and his credentials.

How does Patrick Kennedy not have to take a breathalyzer test when he's pulled for drunk driving? I was stunned to learn this week that Members of Congress cannot be pulled for speeding or be subject to other traffic laws because they may have to go "vote" sometime and they can't be hindered from doing their job. The no speeding tickets bothers me less than the police having no jurisdiction over them. What is appalling is that the police were going to cover up Kennedy's accident. He left the Hawk and Dove, a prominent drinking hole for Capitol Hill interns and staff and proceeded to drive. After he almost kills 2 police officers, he crashes his car and says it was the Ambien he took. What is also disturbing is that he was pulled over for drunk driving in RI a couple of months ago. Maybe this second visit to the Mayo Clinic will help him. This family really has a problem with alcohol. With all of Ted's problems and now Patrick, they should probably stay away from alcohol.

Today's Rant

Man, do I hate the state of Alabama. I went to Talladega over the weekend to the NASCAR race. the race was great on Monday, but what was not fun was leaving the track. There were 2 exits and it took close to 5 hours to leave the track. That was a nightmare. Also, there is road construction all over the state, every male from Alabama has tatoos and looks like he just got out of prison. I don't know if I would do Talladega again.

Today, A federal jury decided al-Qaida conspirator Zacarias Moussaoui deserves life in prison for his role in the deadliest terrorist attack in U.S. history, on Sept. 11, 2001. I agree with this decision. he wasn't one of the monsters who actually drove the planes into the Pentagon and the WTC.

Just when i thought the Virginia State Senate couldn't be anymore dumber, they go and try to raise our taxes $4 Billion dollars. Along with the Governor, the Senate wants to raise money for "transportation". This is all a scam and we need to urge our House of Delegate members to kill these bills when they come for a floor vote.
